PLANT SPOTLIGHT

INDIAN HAWTHORN

The Indian Hawthorn shrub is beautiful and versatile. With its ability to thrive in shade or full sun, cold hardiness, and low water needs, the Indian Hawthorn is a lovely element in any landscape pallet.
Its evergreen, leathery leaves  provide rich color next to buildings, in planting beds, medians, and borders all year long. In mid-spring clusters of showy pink or white flowers add an extra splash of color!

Indian Hawthorn naturally grows in a somewhat-formal, rounded shape, minimizing the need for detailed hand pruning. This makes it  especially popular in commercial landscapes.

FUN FACT! Indian Hawthorn is native to southern China!

YUCCA STALKS

Now that the blooms of the Red Yuccas are beginning to fade it is time for their trim. Trimming the expired stalks will keep the yucca healthy and tidy-looking.

IRRIGATION

When existing pipes are buried at various depths and a sprinkler needs to be replaced, the swing joint can be a huge help. Sprinklers need to be set at the correct height - too low and the water won’t properly water the grass; too high and the sprinkler may be damaged by mowers or be a trip hazard. This can be tricky to get just right!

Thankfully, the swing joint connects the new sprinkler to the existing underground pipe, and allows the irrigation tech to raise and lower the height and angle until it is set perfectly to grade.

PALM TREE TRIM & SKIN

No matter what type of palms you may have, June is a great time to trim and skin them. For species such as date palms and other fruit bearing palms, summer months, when they are flowering and fruiting, is when the debris is at its heaviest. Trimming fruit-heavy fronds as well as any dry, dead fronds will eliminate the risk of this debris falling and causing injury or property damage. Removing expired fronds will also reduce the presence of pests such as rodents and scorpions making their homes in the shelter these dead limbs provide. Skinning can help with pest problems as well, in addition to giving your palms a manicured, resort look.
